Beyond Remittances: The Effects of Migration on Mexican Households
The number of international migrants in the world increased by 21 million between 1990 and 2000, a 14 percent increase, resulting in 175 million people living in a country outside their birth (United Nations 2002). Remittances from migrants have grown rapidly over the same time, with developing countries receiving $126 billion in 2004 (Ratha 2005). The United States holds the largest stock of i...
متن کاملMigration: Ravenstein, Thorntwaite, and Beyond
It is now over one hundred years since Ravenstein published his "Laws of Migration". How have these laws fared? His paper also includes a map of "Currents of Migration", not mentioned in the text. Thornthwaite also compared migration to currents, but did not follow through with this analogy. Others have used similar terminology. More recent migration studies may yield new laws. RAVENSTEIN'S LAW...
متن کاملHow to detect unauthorised usage of a key
Encryption is useful only if the decryption key has not been exposed to adversaries; in particular, it requires that the device performing the crypto operations is free of malware. We explore ways in which some security guarantees can be achieved even if an attacker has succeeded in obtaining access to all the keys in a device, e.g. by exploiting software vulnerabilities. We develop a new proto...
متن کاملEffects of multiple interventions
The purpose of this chapter is (i) to describe some currently available analytical methods for using individual level epidemiological data to estimate the impact of multiple risk factor interventions on health and (ii) to carefully review the conditions under which these methods deliver unbiased estimates of impact. The chapter is organized as follows. In sections 2 and 3, we discuss estimation...
متن کاملSEQUENTIALLY COMPACT S-ACTS
The investigation of equational compactness was initiated by Banaschewski and Nelson. They proved that pure injectivity is equivalent to equational compactness. Here we define the so called sequentially compact acts over semigroups and study some of their categorical and homological properties. Some Baer conditions for injectivity of S-acts are also presented.
